Vol. 201 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Fethard (Tipperary) Fire Station.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he proposes to hold an inquiry into the tragedy in Fethard, County Tipperary, in which Mrs. Mary Corcoran lost her life in a fire in her home; if he is aware that the local authority closed down the local fire station some time ago contrary to the unanimous appeal of the people of the town of Fethard, and that assistance had to come from Clonmel and Cashel, a distance of ten miles; and if he will take immediate steps to have the fire station restored to the town as it is considered that, had the fire station not been closed down, this tragedy might have been avoided.

I regret the loss of life which occurred in this case and I have already asked the fire brigade authority for a full report in the normal way. Until I have had an opportunity to study the report, it would not be proper for me to comment on the adequacy or otherwise of the existing fire cover. The Deputy may rest assured that the matter will be considered by me in all its aspects.
