asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of prosecutions brought on indictment under Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, (b) the annual number of persons returned for trial under this section, and (c) the number of persons, so returned for trial, who were convicted of an offence.

The statistics available relate to the period of 12 months ended on 30th September, 1962, during which Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, has been in force.

During that period : (a) 203 prosecutions were brought on indictment under the section, and 18 of these are at present pending in the District Court; (b) 104 persons were returned for trial under the section, and 23 of these are at present awaiting trial; and (c) 14 of those who have been tried were convicted.
