Vol. 203 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Courts of Justice Building Work.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the work to be undertaken at the Courts of Justice at a total estimated cost of £50,000.

As the Deputy will be aware, the buildings in question suffered considerable damage by fire and explosion in 1922 but the full effects were not immediately discernible and consequently could not have been remedied in the course of the reconstruction works which were carried out between 1925 and 1929. The stresses of the intense heat and the explosions induced latent shakes in the stonework and as a result of this and the effects of natural weathering it was found in the course of an examination which was carried out some time ago, that the stonework was in many places in a state of crumbling decay and in parts dangerous and would have to be renewed. The most seriously affected portions of the buildings were the main entablature to the river facade of the central block, the drum and peristyle of the dome and the screen wall to the West Courtyard. The screen wall, which constituted a grave danger to the public, has already been dealt with and it is hoped to place a contract for the remainder of the work later this year.

Who was responsible for the damage in 1922?

The Free State troops with Macready's guns.

Why not get Singer to pay for it?
