Vol. 204 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Licences.

10.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state in respect of the 12 months period ended 30th June, 1963, the number of licences and authorisations issued to transport concerns, other than to owners of taxis or to CIE, for the transport of passengers and tourists in the State.

11.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state in respect of the twelve months period ended 30th June 1963 the number of large public service vehicles licensed outside the State which carry out transport of passengers and tourists within the State.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 10 and 11 together.

The number of new road passenger licences, excluding renewals of existing licences, issued to transport concerns during the 12 months ended 30th June, 1963, for the transport of passengers and tourists in the State was 66. Of these, 53 were occasional passenger licences, i.e. authorising the operation of passenger services for a specified occasion or occasions only. Such licences are not issued for taxis or for CIE services.

Twenty-eight of the occasional passenger licences issued were issued to foreign tour operators and authorised the operation of motor-coach tours in the State for tourists normally resident outside the State who had made advance reservations from abroad for the tours. There is no information available in my Department regarding the number of buses or coaches with which these tours, or other licensed passenger services, were operated. Passenger licences authorise the operation of passenger services as such and are not related to the number of buses or coaches with which the services are operated.
