Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase in Pensions.

62.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give urgent consideration to the need for a substantial increase in old age, blind and widows' pensions in view of the cost of living consequences of the turnover tax.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Minister for Finance announced in his Budget Statement that increases would be granted in these pensions and in other social welfare payments which would more than offset the effect of the turnover tax on the cost of living. Specific provisions for such increases was accordingly made in the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1963.
