Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Accidents.

124.

asked the Minister for Justice with regard to the period from the introduction of speed limits to the latest convenient date the total number of (a) fatal and (b) non-fatal accidents which occurred, segregating those which occurred (1) in the city of Dublin, (2) in other areas where speed limits were in operation and (3) in non-speed limit areas, indicating, if possible, with regard to (1) and (2) the number which in the opinion of the Gardaí were caused by drivers exceeding the speed limit.

The special compilation of figures on the lines suggested would involve an exceptional amount of clerical work and the collection of material from all Garda stations. I do not consider that the value of the figures would justify the work involved especially as it would be impossible for the Garda Síochána to offer any worthwhile opinion as to the relationship, if any, between the accidents and possible breaches of speed-limit regulations, nor could any valid conclusion on this matter be drawn from any figures that might be compiled.

Garda returns of road accidents during the year are processed by the Central Statistics Office and the results are made available to both Houses of the Oireachtas as early as possible in the new year.
