Vol. 205 No. 12

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Estates Limited.

23.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in the light of the recommendation by the inspectors into the affairs of Irish Estates Limited, he considers whether it was fair and proper for the Board to dismiss Mr. E. J. Doody; and whether he proposes to take steps to have Mr. Doody reinstated and compensated in respect of all losses suffered by him by reason of such dismissal.

24.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance what steps he proposes to take in relation to the directorship of the Irish Life Assurance Company Limited and its subsidiary, Irish Estates Limited, in the light of the criticism of the Board of Irish Estates Limited in the report of the inspectors' inquiry into the affairs of Irish Estates Limited.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 23 and 24 together.

As a shareholder of the Irish Life Assurance Company Limited, I am requisitioning an extraordinary general meeting of the company to consider the matters arising out of the inquiry. I shall make a statement to the Dáil in due course.

Can the Minister say if he intends to permit a debate on that statement when he makes it?

That is not a matter for me to decide, I am afraid.

Mr. Ryan

May we take it that the extraordinary general meeting will be held in the near future?

Yes, within a few weeks.

25.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance the total cost to the Irish Life Assurance Company Limited of the blunders of the Directors of Irish Estates Limited referred to in the letter of 23rd October last from the Chairman of Irish Life Assurance Company Limited to the shareholders of that company.

I have no information about the matters dealt with in the report on the affairs of Irish Estates Limited, other than that contained in the report itself.

Mr. Ryan

Has the Minister made any inquiries regarding the property handed over to the Irish Life Assurance Company by Irish Estates which is referred to in the report in terms which suggest that the Minister for Finance might have additional information regarding the property invested?

No; as I said, I have no more information than was published in the report, so far.

Mr. Ryan

Will the Minister make further inquiries about it?

I should prefer to wait until we hold this meeting.
