Vol. 206 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - President Kennedy Memorial Stamp.

12.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange immediately for the issue of a stamp to commemorate the visit to this country and the later death of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy of the USA; and if the stamp can be issued this year to commemorate his long remembered and cherished visit.

I would refer the Deputy to the Taoiseach's announcement yesterday of the manner in which the Government consider the late President Kennedy can best be commemorated; it is not considered appropriate to issue a special stamp for this purpose.

I would suggest to the Taoiseach, through the Minister, that whatever is done should be done in the form of a message and I would suggest the words of the late President Kennedy at his inauguration "Ask not what the State can do for you but what you can do for the State." There is a bit too much face-saving going on with regard to the form the memorial should take.

That has nothing to do with the question.
