Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Dangerous Quarries.

23.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, having regard to the need of filling without delay all disused quarries in Dublin City and County so as to avoid any further fatal accidents, he will approach the Dublin Corporation and the Dublin County Council with a view to stopping dumping at any points except dangerous quarries, including quarries in private ownership, until such time as those quarries are filled in.

The adoption of the suggestion in question would not be feasible. Generally these quarries are water-filled and I understand that dumping of household refuse in them has already been considered and found to be impracticable for public health reasons. Furthermore, I am informed that prior drainage of quarries near built-up areas would endanger nearby buildings. It appears, therefore, that fencing may have to be relied upon for immediate protection in many cases pending the long-term process of reclamation by dry filling.
