Vol. 206 No. 9

Written Answers. - Agricultural Employers.

61.

asked the Taoiseach the number of farmer agricultural employers, and the number of non-farmer agricultural employers according to the size of the farm, having regard to information contained in the Census returns in 1951 and 1961.

The number of farmer employers, classified according to size of farm, at the 1951 and 1961 Censuses of Population are shown in the following table:—

While the 1961 Census gave figures of persons who were landholders but whose principal occupation was not that of farmer, it is not possible to classify these persons by whether or not they employed farm labourers.

62.

asked the Taoiseach the number of agricultural employers revealed in the Censuses of 1951 and 1961, according to the size of farm; and if the definition of employer in Table 105 of Pr. 4511 corresponds to employer on pages 162 and 167 of Pr. 7415.

As indicated in reply to Question No. 61, the information requested by the Deputy was obtained at the Censuses of Population only in respect of persons who stated their principal occupation to be that of farmer. Consequently the reply to that question contains all the information available on agricultural employers classified according to size of farm.

The definition of employer in Table 105 of Pr. 4511 corresponds to that used on pages 162 and 167 of Pr. 7415 except that persons temporarily in hospitals were excluded in 1951 but were included in the 1961 figures.
