Vol. 208 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Pensions of National Teachers.

68.

asked the Minister for Education if he will take steps to extend the recent increase in the pensions of national teachers to teachers who were trained prior to 1921, in view of the fact that after many years service the pensions of these teachers are inadequate to meet the increased cost of living.

The purpose of the recent increase was to bring the pension of all teachers who had retired on or before 31st December, 1959, up to the level of teachers who retired with the benefit of the scale of salary which operated from the 1st January, 1960. This applied in every case where increases previously given were not such as to have brought the pension above the January, 1960 level. The date of training was not a factor in determining the increase.
