Mr. Jones

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has any proposals, or contemplates any proposals, to seek statutory authority for the recoupment to local authorities of a greater proportion of housing loan charges; and if he will state the amounts recouped to each local authority for each of the years 1957-58 to 1962-63 and for 1963-64 to date.

Mr. Blaney

I recently announced a substantial increase in the amount of subsidy available towards the provision by local authorities of dwellings for small farmers the valuation of whose land holdings is £5 or less. The new rates of subsidy will be payable in respect of dwellings the erection of which commenced on or after 1st October, 1963. Other aspects of subsidy policy will be reviewed in connection with forthcoming legislation.

The reply to the latter part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, which with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

NOTES:

1. The variations in the amount paid to a local authority as between one year and another are due to a number of factors including the payment of final instalments of subsidy in respect of schemes for which payments on account were made in previous years.

2. Certain annual subsidies paid to housing authorities under pre-1932 legislation were compounded in 1958-59 in accordance with the provisions of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1958.
