Vol. 208 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldier's Discharge Application.

105.

asked the Minister for Defence if a member of the Defence Forces (name supplied) submitted his discharge from the Defence Forces at the Curragh Camp on 3rd March, 1964, paid down the necessary prescribed money in order to effect his discharge, and received a receipt for it; if it is a fact that the Commanding Officer interviewed the member, and told him that he would do all in his power to prevent his discharge and to keep him in the Forces for a further period, mentioning three months, and further stating that he would have a decision in this case deliberately held up as long as possible; if he will state if this is a proper and correct attitude towards a member of the Defence Forces with an excellent record of splendid army service; if he will investigate this matter and see to it that this application will be given sympathetic consideration, and shall not be interferred with in any way; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 3 Márta, 1964, the member in question made application for discharge by purchase and lodged the appropriate sum for which a receipt was issued to him. His commanding officer expressed disappointment that he was leaving na BuanÓglaigh just after he had been fully trained in his trade but informed him that his application would be forwarded through the normal channels. He advised him, however, not to depend on an immediate discharge in view of the fact that under Rialacháin Óglaigh na hÉireann discharge shall not be effected until such date, not later than three months after the date of lodgment of the appropriate sum, as An tArd Aidiúnach, having regard to the exigencies of the service and the question of replacement, may decide. The officer forwarded the application without delay and the discharge has been authorised.

Clane, County Kildare.
