Vol. 209 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Fresh Pork.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of considerable dissatisfaction among pig producers because of the recent restrictions on the export of fresh pork imposed by the Pigs and Bacon Commission, as expressed in resolutions from County Longford Committee of Agriculture; and whether he will undertake to permit increased quantities of pigmeat to be exported as pork, particularly by those firms whose licences are confined to the export of pork and who have no curing facilities, in view of the recommendation of the survey team report on the bacon and pigmeat industry, which said that the pork industry is a trade which should be developed on a permanent basis rather than operated as an emergency exit in times of pressure on the market.

I am not aware of dissatisfaction among pig producers because of the action taken by the Pigs and Bacon Commission, with my concurrence, to ensure that we fill the British bacon quota under the multilateral understanding negotiated earlier this year.
