The English-Irish dictionary edited by Dr. Tomás de Bhaldraithe was published in June, 1959. About one-quarter of the corresponding Irish-English dictionary has been completed. It is not possible at present to state when it is expected that this dictionary will be published. I am taking steps to have the progress of the work expedited.
Would the Minister not agree it has taken quite a long time to have it completed?
Most of the delay has been due to difficulty in getting suitable sub-editing staff or staff about that level. There were three competitions and I think only two people came forward.
Did the Minister say there is difficulty in recruiting suitable staff to complete it?
At a certain level, not to complete it but to complete it expeditiously. To do the work faster would require greater strength of staff.
Did the Minister say sub-editing staff?
About that level, assistant editor.
Are there any problems in respect of ordinary clerical staff?
No.
There are sufficient there?
Any problem I am aware of has been one in regard to assistant editors. Three assistant editors are required and they have been unable to get more of them.
