Vol. 211 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sales of British Postage Stamps.

18.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of British postage stamps sold annually at the General Post Office in Dublin; if there is a limit to the number sold to any particular purchaser at one time; if so, what is the limit; and why it is imposed.

The number of British postage stamps sold at the General Post Office, Dublin, in the year ended 31st May, 1964, was 32,400. There is a limit of 5d. to the value which may be sold at a time to any one person. This is because only small stocks are held and also to restrict the use of the stamps for remitting money, for which other services are available. It is not the normal practice for one country to sell the stamps of another; Irish stamps are not available in Britain. British stamps are sold here as an entirely exceptional arrangement to meet casual requirements.
