Vol. 211 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Roscommon Road Repair.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received an application for financial assistance from the Roscommon County Council towards the repair of the road leading through Mote Park Estate; and, if so, whether he will give a grant for this purpose.

I received an application for a bog development grant from the Roscommon County Council towards the repair of the roads leading through Mote Park Estate. The proposal is not eligible for a grant under that scheme, nor, in view of the fact that there are no unemployment assistance recipients in the area, is it eligible for a grant under Minor Employment Schemes. The only other relevant scheme administered by the Special Employment Schemes Office is the Rural Improvements Scheme, which requires a contribution from the benefiting farmers, and is intended to assist farmers in repairing minor accommodation roads, for which no other public authority can offer assistance. I understand the county council are in correspondence with the Land Commission in this matter, and have been offered a grant towards the cost of the road repairs. In the circumstances, I do not think the Special Employment Schemes Office should be called upon to intervene.
