Vol. 211 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shipbuilding.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state the approximate amount of wages paid for shipbuilding, as apart from building the yard, in each financial year to date since 1959-60.

While the information sought by the Deputy about the amount of wages paid for shipbuilding is available to my Department, I do not consider that information of this nature relating to the operation of a private company should be published.

23.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the names of the members of the committee appointed by him to handle the shipbuilding subsidy; the qualification of each such member for such membership; whether any, and if so, which are civil servants; and the names of any company of which each such member is a director.

The names of the members of the Committee appointed by me to handle the shipbuilding subsidy and the qualifications and positions held by the members are as follows:

Mr. J.J. Walsh, M.Econ.Sc., Member of the Board of the Industrial Development Authority, director of Shannon Development Company Limited;

Mr. F.A. Casey, A.C.I.S., Projects Manager, Industrial Credit Company Limited, director of Shipping Finance Corporation Limited;

Mr. T.A. Cullen, A.S.A.A., Auditor, Office of Comptroller and Auditor General;

Mr. P.A. Lalor, F.C.A., Senior Professional Accountant, Department of Industry and Commerce;

Mr. J.A. O'Connell, A.A.C.C.A., Assistant Auditor, Office of Comptroller and Auditor General;

Mr. G.G. Tierney, A.C.W.A., Senior Investments Executive, Industrial Credit Company Limited;

Mr. P. Shiels, M.C.M.S., M.I.Mar.E., who is a consultant marine engineer and naval architect, advises the Committee on technical matters.

Perhaps the Minister will explain what the initials mean.

I have read in full the ones I understand myself. They are imposing, anyway.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether it is correct that a total of £1,320,000 in 1963-64 and 1964-65 has been authorised by the Dáil for the payment of the shipbuilding subsidy; and, if so, how he calculated the figure of £570,000 given by him in the Dáil on 24th June, 1964.

I have made it clear to the House on more than one occasion that the total subsidy for shipbuilding was estimated at £1,220,000 and not £1,320,000 as stated by the Deputy. Of this amount the sum of £650,000 has already been paid and the figure of £570,000 given by me in the Dáil on 24th June, 1964, represents the balance.

Can the Minister explain how £990,000 and £330,000 make £1,220,000 and not £1,320,000? The figure I have given is the total in the Book of Estimates for the current year—this year and last year.

£990,000 was not expended, anyway.

Could the Minister say in the Estimates what was expended?

I shall check on it. Anyway, £990,000 was not expended and the remaining figure will not be expended, either.

Could the Minister give the references to when he referred to it?

I have not the references here but I know I referred to it on a few occasions.

I have tried to find it in the Dáil Debates but I could not.

On 18th July, 1963, the Deputy used the correct figure himself.

The fact is the Minister's statement in the Book of Estimates is misleading until he corrects it.

(Interruptions.)
25.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the amounts actually paid during the year 1963-64 out of the sum of £990,000 voted for Subhead P of the Vote for his Department, and the date and amount of each such payment; and if he will further state the date and amount of any payment made to date during 1964-65.

The total amount actually paid out of the sum of £990,000 voted for shipbuilding subsidy, Subhead R.R. of the Vote, in the financial year 1963/64 was £650,000 as follows:—

Date of Payment
