Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Flag at New York World Fair.

78.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the Irish flag was flown at all times from dawn to dusk at the Irish pavilion at the New York World Fair.

The Irish flag was on display at all times in a position of honour in the Irish Pavilion in the New York World's Fair.

Is the Minister aware there are allegations to the contrary?

I remember allegations to the contrary being made before the Summer Recess, but these allegations referred to the Irish flag being flown on the Avenue of Nations. In reply to the questions at that time, I said I had caused investigations to be carried out into these allegations and I was satisfied they were groundless.

Mr. Ryan

Is it not the position that the flag originally flew over the Pavilion but that it was taken down and put inside?

That is a refinement I am afraid I cannot answer.

Mr. Ryan

That is a third matter to inquire into.

There was an allegation made in a television programme from Dundalk recently to the effect that it was not flown?

These allegations have been proved wrong.

The Minister is satisfied?

I am not satisfied because two of my friends wrote and told me——

They may have been blind.

They were not.

The Minister has not said it was flown; he said it was in a place of honour.

That is one of Deputy Ryan's refinements. Of course, it was flown.
