Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Work Permits for Non-Nationals.

79.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate the estimated number of non-nationals for whom (a) permanent and (b) temporary work permits were issued during the past three years; and the number of refusals during the same period.

Alien employment permits are not issued on a permanent basis. Such permits are normally issued for a maximum period of one year, subject to renewal.

The total number of permits granted in each of the calendar years 1961, 1962, and 1963 was as follows:

1961:

1,205;

1962:

1,123;

1963:

1,363

These figures include permits of a very temporary nature e.g. those issued in respect of entertainment and variety artists, seasonal workers in the hotel and catering industry and University students on Summer vacation employment. These temporary permits account for approximately 36 per cent of all permits issued.

The number of permits refused in the three year period was 18.
