Vol. 212 No. 6

Written Answers. - Agricultural Workers' Wages.

38.

asked the Taoiseach if he can state from agricultural statistics in his Department the average weekly wages of agricultural workers in each county and province and in the State in 1909, 1913, 1916, 1919, 1924, 1928, 1932 and 1935.

No comprehensive series of figures is available for the average weekly wages of agricultural workers for all the years specified in the question. For the years 1909-10, 1913 and 1915 information available concerning the weekly wages of permanent agricultural labourers in each county is that published in the series of official reports entitled "Report and Tables relating to Irish Agricultural Labourers" issued by the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland. Corresponding particulars for 1916 and 1919 are not available. In each of the relevant reports (Cd. 5033, Cd. 7418 and Cd. 8386) a range of wages is given for (a) Ploughmen, (b) Cattlemen (except for 1909-10) (c) General farm labourers and (d) Boys; for each of these categories separate figures are given for (i) With board and lodgings, (ii) Having free house, etc. and (iii) Without free house, etc. It is not possible from the data available to determine the average weekly wages for all agricultural labourers in each county. Using as weights the numbers of permanent male agricultural labourers, 18 years of age and over in each county as returned at the 1912 agricultural enumeration, estimates of the range of weekly wages of general farm labourers can be obtained for the provinces and for the State. The results of these computations are given in Table I together with the corresponding weekly wages data for each county.

Particulars have been published in "Some Statistics of Wages and Hours of Work in 1937, with comparative figures for certain previous years" (P. No. 2904) of the average earnings during a week in July, of permanent male agricultural labourers over 21 years of age who were stated not to have had a free house or allowance of any kind. These figures cover the years 1925 to 1937 inclusive. Corresponding particulars for 1924 are not available. The figures for 1925, 1928, 1932 and 1935 are reproduced in Table 2.
