Vol. 216 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Broiler Chicken Industry.

42.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if in view of the fact that page 118 of his Department's book on Agriculture in the Second Programme for Economic Expansion 1970 contains poultry numbers and output in the years 1958 to 1963 inclusive, and that page 121 states that production of broiler chickens in 1963 was roughly four and a half million birds, he will state (a) the estimated number of broiler chickens produced in 1964 and their output value, and (b) the estimated number and output value of broiler chickens included in the target of poultry output of £5 million by 1970 referred to on page 119 paragraph II of his Department's book on Agriculture in the Second Programme for Economic Expansion.

The estimated number of broiler chickens produced in 1964 was 6,483,000 and their output value was £2,080,000.

With regard to the second part of the Question, the 1970 target figure for poultry output was, due to the lack of homogeneity in the pattern of poultry production, calculated on a global basis covering all types of poultry production. It is not, accordingly, possible to give the precise particulars requested by the Deputy.
