Vol. 216 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill Island Facilities.

44.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the serious plight of the people of Achill Island, County Mayo where there is no regular employment of any kind despite the fact that the sea fishing industry could be developed there; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

My Department and Roinn na Gaeltachta are at present examining the possibility of further improving landing facilities in Achill Island. An Bord Iascaigh Mhara will be only too pleased to consider applications from fishermen in Achill, as elsewhere, for boats, on generous terms, and other fishing facilities. I regret to say that the response from Achill to advertisements for applicants under my Department's schemes for training boys as fishermen, and for training fishermen as skippers, has been very poor.
