Vol. 216 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Garda Strength.

46.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is satisfied that the present number of Gardaí, including the detective force, on duty in the Dublin area, including Dún Laoghaire, is adequate.

I have been assured by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, that the detective branch in the Dublin area is adequate and I accept his assurance.

A review of the uniformed strength in the area has been going on for some time but I have not yet been informed of any proposals that the Commissioner may have in that regard.

Is there any information available to the Minister which would indicate to him that the detective force is not adequate fully to investigate the substantial increase in crime which has occurred in the Dublin area, including Dún Laoghaire?

I am not sure that there has been a substantial increase in crime and the information I have indicates that the Commissioner is satisfied that the Detective Branch in the Dublin area is adequate for its purpose.

Perhaps the Minister would ask the Commissioner to have another look at the position. I understand some of the Garda authorities are dissatisfied with the strength of the force in view of the growth of population in the area and the problem presented by that increase.

The strength of the detective force in Dublin has been revised upwards and my understanding is that the Commissioner is now satisfied that it is adequate but I shall certainly mention the Deputy's views.
