Vol. 217 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mentally Handicapped Schoolchildren.

62.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that, owing to his Department's regulations specifying the numbers of children necessary for qualification for one or more teachers in a national school, cases are arising where mentally handicapped children are being retained, to their own detriment, in normal national schools in order to keep up the numbers and to qualify for teachers; and if he will investigate the position in this regard and ensure that in future the Department's regulations are applied more flexibly so as to prevent such cases.

I am not aware that the facts are as stated in the Deputy's question. I will, however, be prepared to investigate fully any specific case which may be brought to my attention.
