asked the Minister for Local Government the total mileage of roads and streets in the State, giving the information in respect of each of the following: (a) main roads, (b) secondary and county roads, (c) city streets, and (d) park and institution roads; and how many vehicles are licensed to drive upon these roads.

The total mileage of public roads at 31st March, 1964, the latest date for which figures are available, was 52,288 miles.

The following is a breakdown of the total on the lines requested at (a), (b) and (c) of the question:

Main (trunk and link) roads (excluding the four county boroughs)

9,746 miles

County Roads

41,253,,

Main (trunk and link) and county borough roads in the four county boroughs

799,,

Other urban roads

490,,

The information requested at (d) is not available in my Department.

The total number of vehicles under licence for use on the public roads was 415,263 in August, 1964, the latest date for which figures are available.
