Vol. 217 No. 8

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Letterkenny Water Supply.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make a statement concerning the serious position of the piped water service in Letterkenny, County Donegal, where in certain parts of the town no service is available.

For some time past the water supply in Letterkenny has had to be regulated in order to minimise possible hardships on the residents. I understand that the position was aggravated recently by bursts in the main from Lough Salt and that it was necessary to cut off the town supply entirely for several hours. In the course of discussions held in January last between officers of my Department and of the local authority, it was agreed that priority should be given to the ascertainment in detail of the several causes of the shortages occurring in the water supply system, for example, wastages, leaks, pressures etc. Since then certain remedial measures have been taken: a break pressure tank is being provided to help the high areas of the town and work will commence soon on the renewal of pipe line and provision of a booster in the New Line Road.

Further measures, as recommended by the consultant in his report of 26th March, 1965, involving relaying of three sections of pipe and the installation of a temporary booster to provide a supply to Glencar area in the event of a failure of this source have also been approved. I am informed that the consultant's report and recommendations on a complete survey of the entire system are expected to be completed shortly.
