Vol. 217 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Harbour Master.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if a person has as yet been appointed to the position of Dublin Harbour Master, having regard to the fact that the present occupant of the position is due to retire.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he will outline the procedure adopted in the appointment of a person to the position of Dublin Harbour Master, and in particular, if there is any provision made for a person outside the Appointments Commission to be present when the interviewing takes place for such post.

With your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.

No person has yet been appointed to the position of Dublin Harbour Master to replace the retiring occupant of that position. The Local Appointments Commissioners are dealing with a request from the Dublin Port and Docks Board to recommend to them a person for appointment to that position.

The Commissioners invited applications for the position by advertisements in newspapers here and abroad. The applicants have been interviewed by an interview board which included persons having experience in maritime matters and harbour administration. The Commissioners hope to be soon in a position to recommend to the Port and Docks Board, for appointment, the candidate found to be best qualified.

There is no provision made for the presence, when the candidates for such posts are being interviewed, of anyone except the candidate, the members of the interview board and the officer who acts as secretary to the interview board. In accordance with the usual practice, none of the members of the board was drawn from the staff of the Local Appointments Commission.
