Vol. 217 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Garments.

33.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will now request the Revenue Commissioners to remove the embargo or quota on the export of Japanese cotton garments to Great Britain in view of the 15 per cent import tax imposed by the latter country.

The restriction on exports of garments was imposed at the request of the British authorities to prevent the evasion by British importers of the limitation imposed by Britain on imports of cotton cloth from certain countries.

I do not consider that the imposition of the British temporary charge on imports would warrant a departure from this arrangement.
