Vol. 217 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Growing of Ash.

46.

asked the Minister for Lands the total area of land, controlled by his Department, which is planted with ash; and if he will indicate where these areas are.

47.

asked the Minister for Lands if his Department have any particular policy regarding the growing of ash, so as to provide a continuing supply of timber for hurleys.

With your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 46 and 47 together.

As ash is usually planted in rows or small clumps in State forests rather than in concentrated blocks, statements as to areas planted would be estimated only and would be misleading.

Ash and other hardwoods are planted where suitable land becomes available to the Forestry Division of my Department and plantings of ash have been spread widely throughout the country. The extent of recent ash planting is indicated by the following figures of the total number of ash trees planted in each of the years 1960-61 to 1964-65.

No. of trees

1960/61

1961/62

1962/63

1963/64
