Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Parking Facilities.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of the latest convenient date the number of motor-cars in Dublin city and county and the number of cars which can be lawfully parked in on-street or off-street public parking places which are bounded by the canals.

There were 120,225 mechanically propelled vehicles, including 76,956 motor cars, registered and under current licence in Dublin city and county on 10th August, 1964, the latest date for which figures for vehicle registrations are available.

There are no figures available for the number of vehicles which may be legally parked on the streets in the area referred to since the position in this matter has been fluid in recent years due to the extension of the one-way street system. It will continue to be fluid due to increasing traffic and the regulation of traffic which that will entail. The number of parking places also varies with the varying sizes and types of vehicles and the time of the day. Normal restrictions apply between 8.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. but outside those hours many restrictions are relaxed and within those hours further restrictions are imposed at peak hours on parking for the purpose of loading and unloading.

With regard to public off-street parking facilities provided by the corporation there are four permanent sites and twenty-six temporary sites with accommodation for 2,683 vehicles in the area between Dorset Street, the Custom House, Adelaide Road and the Four Courts. This does not include private parking facilities provided in the area.

Is there even a rough estimate available of the on-street parking in the area?

If there has been an estimate, I have not got a note of it here.

Could the Minister say if there is a record in any Department of the number of horse-drawn vehicles in Dublin city and county, or would it be his responsibility to supply that figure?

Transport and Power.

I put it down for Transport and Power and it was ruled out.

They do not pay any road tax.

The record does not exist, therefore?

I do not know; I do not think so.
