Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscommon-Leitrim Roads.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government what roads in (a) County Roscommon and (b) County Leitrim are designated arterial roads; on which roads development has started; when they are likely to be finished; what developments are necessary on the remaining roads; and when those developments are likely to start.

The following are the arterial roads in the counties mentioned:

(a) In County Roscommon: The portion of the Dublin-Galway road between Athlone and Ballinasloe; the portion of the Dublin-Longford-Castlebar road between Lanesboro' and the county boundary west of Ballinlough; the portion of the Dublin-Sligo road from Carrick-on-Shannon to the county boundary north of Boyle; and the portion of the Galway-Sligo road near Cloonfad.

(b) In County Leitrim: Those portions of the Dublin-Sligo-Lifford road which lie within the county.

In the period since the introduction of the Arterial Road Improvement grant, improvement works have been carried out, or are in progress, on a number of sections of the Dublin-Galway road in County Roscommon and also on the arterial road in County Leitrim.

As regards the remainder of the question, arterial roads are at present the subject of a special study on the completion of which I hope to announce the details of a five-year programme for the improvement of these routes, with particular emphasis on the sections most urgently in need of attention. In this programme, due account will be taken of the routes referred to by the Deputy.
