Vol. 218 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Five-Day School Week.

70.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the advent of the five-day week among industrial workers, he will consider recommending to the managers of secondary schools that a redistribution of school hours be made so as to enable children to enjoy a five-day school week.

I do not think that it would be appropriate for me to intervene in this matter.

My main concern must be to ensure that the number of hours of instruction per week in schools is sufficient to enable all pupils to follow a broadlybased course of instruction. I am satisfied that school authorities should have discretion as to how this need can best be met. Local circumstances will in many cases influence the decision as to which is preferable, a longer schoolday for five days a week or, as is more usual at present, a school week extending over six days.
