Vol. 219 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Foreign Hardboard.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the use by a State sponsored body (details supplied) of foreign hardboard in the construction of offices; if, having regard to the importance of using Irish materials when available, he will have discussions with the body in question; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The purchase of material is a matter of day to day administration in which I do not intervene but in the context of the Buy Irish campaign I have made inquiries in this case.

I have been informed by the company concerned that an order for Irish-made hardboard was recently placed with a reputable Dublin supplier but, through an error, some of the sheets supplied were of foreign manufacture, which was not noticed when delivery was effected; in fact, only 3 out of 50 sheets were marked "foreign". The supplier has expressed regret that the mistake occurred and has undertaken to replace the foreign hardboard with Irish products.
