Vol. 224 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glounthaune (Cork) Pedestrian Bridge.

7.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received an application from the Cork County Council for sanction to place a bridge for pedestrian traffic over the main Cork-Cobh-Midleton Road at Glounthaune for the safety of some 200 children who have to cross the road daily to and from school; if he is aware that there have been two fatal accidents involving pedestrians at this spot during the past three months; and that 11 accidents have taken place on this very dangerous road; and if he will have sanction forwarded as a matter of extreme urgency.

I have received no proposal from the Cork County Council in this matter.

I understand, however, that the council propose to provide a traffic warden for a trial period of three months at Glounthaune. The warden will be provided at the point where children going to and from Glounthaune national school cross the main road. In the meantime consideration of any further steps which might be taken is being deferred by the council.

Is the Minister aware of what happened last week? A farmer was knocked down when he was taking four children across the road at this place. Will he give any guarantee as to the safety of the warden?

(Interruptions.)
