Vol. 224 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Bridge.

8.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in having a new bridge provided at Cloonacanna. Swinford, County Mayo; and if he is aware that Mayo County Council have blocked the road to traffic because the old bridge is regarded as unsafe.

I am aware that the bridge at Cloonacanna has been closed to traffic for some years. Plans for its replacement were approved by my Department in November, 1964 and the Mayo County Council have been free to proceed with the invitation of tenders for the carrying out of the work since then. The council, who had been considering the possibility of financing this work by borrowing, decided in June last to revert to their original intention of undertaking the work with the aid of their annual county road improvement grant, and a proposal to allocate a portion of their current year's grant to the work was formally approved by my Department on 4th August last. The invitation of tenders for the work is a matter for the county council and I understand that arrangements are at present being made for the issue of the necessary advertisement.
