Vol. 224 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - UCG Accommodation.

35.

asked the Minister for Education if there are any plans before his Department for the provision of additional accommodation and facilities for students attending University College, Galway; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

The position in regard to accommodation at University College, Galway, is that a new classroom building was completed there in 1960/61 and a further new building for the Botany and Zoology Departments was completed in 1963. In the meantime sums to a total of £48,000 have been provided by my Department towards the cost of temporary accommodation at the College.

The College authorities indicated in December 1964 their desire to be allowed to proceed with further new buildings. They were advised that, before sanction could be given for any new building project, it would be necessary for them to submit the schedule of accommodation for the proposed building together with a memorandum explaining the necessity for the additional accommodation concerned and the reasons for which priority should be given to the project.

Outline plans and schedules of accommodation for a new building comprising accommodation for the Departments of Chemistry, Experimental Physics and Biochemistry and for a new Library and Cafeteria submitted to the Department by the College authorities were received on Monday last, the 26th September, 1966. These proposals will be examined as soon as possible.
