Vol. 224 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closure of Dublin Factory.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a factory (name supplied) in Finglas, Dublin is closing down; and that this will result in the disemployment of 50 men; and if he proposes to take any action to avoid this happening.

I am informed that a decision to close the factory has not been reached by the firm in question; if and when such a decision is taken the firm will have discussions with the Union concerned in the matter who have been so informed in writing.

Is the Minister not aware that this firm has transferred its business to Wicklow?

I am not so aware. I am aware that the firm has premises in Wicklow on which work has taken place. My information is that business has not been transferred and that a decision has not been taken as yet on the question of the factory in Finglas.

Having regard to the fact that this firm got a subsidy from the State to operate in Wicklow, will the Minister ensure that there will be a proper understanding between the trade union and the firm concerned in relation to the factory in Finglas?

My information is that the union concerned has been informed by the firm that if and when they take a decision to close the factory, they will have discussions with the union. The Deputy can be assured that, as far as I am concerned, anything I can do to assist in securing the employment of the men concerned will be done.
