Vol. 224 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Deficiency Payments.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount of the deficiency payments received from the British Government for July, August and September; and to what purpose this money has been put since it was received.

Payment from the British Government in respect of support on imports of Irish carcase beef and lamb into the United Kingdom during the months of July, August and September will be received after the end of the current United Kingdom fatstock year in March next. The amount can then be calculated as the rates of support to be received are the average rates of deficiency payments made during the year to United Kingdom producers of cattle, sheep and lambs. So far as can be estimated at this stage the amount in respect of our exports during July, August and September will be approximately £400,000. The money will be applied towards the cost incurred of supporting our exports of carcase beef and lamb to Britain. As already announced, the Government will meet the cost of supporting any exports of eligible beef and lamb to Britain in excess of the quantities to be supported by the British Government.
