Vol. 225 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Irish Seamen.

15.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if alternative employment has been found for the 44 Irish seamen who were employed on the vessel that Irish Shipping, Ltd. sold recently.

Seventeen of the crew of the last ship sold by Irish Shipping Ltd. were permanent employees of the company. The company has no information about the employment of the remaining 27 non-permanent employees, of whom nine were not Irish seamen. There would appear to be no problem of unemployment so far as seamen are concerned. They sign on for particular voyages and at the end of each voyage may sign on for other ships at home or abroad. The company finds difficulty from time to time in obtaining enough men to man their ships.
