Vol. 225 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Female Factory Inspectors.

30.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of female factory inspectors employed by his Department.

The number of female factory inspectors employed by the Department of Labour is three.

Mr. O'Leary

Are there any plans to increase the number of female staff?

There was no application by a lady in the last competition.

Mr. O'Leary

Is that the criterion in this Department for new female inspectors, that a female should present herself to be appointed? Has the Department itself no requirement that a certain number of female inspectors should be provided? One of the areas where there are most complaints is from girls working in textile factories which would be an appropriate area for female rather than male inspectors.

I shall inquire, but my information is that the male inspectorate is adequate for these areas of predominantly female employment.

Mr. O'Leary

Will the Minister and his Department not increase the number of female inspectors?

There was no female competitor in the last competition.

Mr. O'Leary

That is not a satisfactory answer, to say that because there was no applicant that finishes the problem.

Would the Minister indicate whether or not male and female factory inspectors are paid the same salary?

The starting salary is the same, but the top is different.

But the work is the same.
