Vol. 225 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo School Transport.

73.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of school transport difficulties in County Mayo arising from the cessation of special employment schemes and the consequent deterioration of roads formerly maintained under these schemes; and if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

I cannot accept the premise on which this question is based. My information is that there is no foundation for it. There are in all 29 transport schemes to national schools in operation in County Mayo about which I have received no complaints whatsoever.

Would the Minister care to visit some parts of County Mayo where these things can be pointed out to him? In fact, the Parliamentary Secretary who is responsible for that type of work has admitted to me across the floor of the Chamber that the position is in fact as stated in the question. Will the Minister consider visiting these areas and seeing for himself?
