Vol. 226 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Post Office and Telephone Exchange.

14.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the present position of the plans for the provision of a new post office and automatic telephone exchange in Cavan town.

Final sketch plans of the scheme as a whole have been approved. Work commenced this week on the first stage of the scheme, that is, the provision of a terminal building for the coaxial cable which is being laid from Mullingar.

(Cavan): Can the Parliamentary Secretary say when it is anticipated that work on the post office will commence?

It is only quite recently that planning permission was received.

(Cavan): When was it asked for?

I have not got that information but it is only quite recently that it was received. It can be taken that there will be no avoidable delay.

He was not long learning that phrase.

(Cavan): Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this site in the centre of the town of Cavan was acquired about five years ago and that it is in the interest of the town that the building should proceed quickly?

It is in our own interest, too.

(Cavan): Could the Parliamentary Secretary— this is the fourth time I have put down this question—give me some indication now as to when work on the post office will commence?

The question asks for the present position and the present position is that we have commenced on the first stage.

(Cavan): That is a building away back at Abbey Street which is to house a cable. I am interested in the post office building itself.

What I can say is that every effort is being made to have the work on the new building and the exchange go ahead.

(Cavan): May I take it that the Parliamentary Secretary does not know when the work will commence? If I put down a question in a fortnight's time, will he be able to give me the information?

If the question is put down, I will endeavour to reply to it.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that but for the efficiency of Cavan fire brigade it would have to be built this year?
