Vol. 226 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Telephone Exchanges.

15.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in the installation of the much-needed equipment in the extension of the Exchequer Street exchange in Dame Court, Dublin.

Installation is held up pending delivery of certain essential items of apparatus. Meanwhile the equipment available is sufficient to carry present traffic.

16.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the cause of the delay in the extension and modification of the north main telephone exchange in Hammam Buildings, Dublin; and when he anticipates that this important work will commence.

No extension or modification of this exchange is planned or required.

17.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the cause of the delay in improving the Clontarf telephone exchange; and when he expects the necessary work to commence.

The extension and rearrangement of this exchange will be generally as planned. Delivery of the necessary equipment is proceeding and installation will commence shortly.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when work will start?

Without avoidable delay.

A number of people are depending on this work for employment and I want to know what the position is.

Exactly as I said.

There are people threatened with redundancy over this delay. There is no answer to that.

18.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if any arrangements have been made to extend the telephone exchange in Ship Street, Dublin; and when is it intended to instal more apparatus which is very necessary for satisfactory service.

No additional apparatus is required at present to carry the traffic at this exchange. Provision for future expansion is under consideration.
