Vol. 227 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Cats and Dogs Home.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the valuable public and humane service being rendered by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, he will introduce legislation to enable Dublin Corporation to make a grant towards the expenses of running the Cats and Dogs Home.

In November, 1965 Dublin Corporation passed a resolution requesting the Minister to introduce legislation "to enable the corporation to make a grant to the Dogs and Cats Home or, alternatively, that the grant made to the Home by the Government be increased ". The corporation were informed that the preparation of special legislation was not envisaged but that their request had been noted for consideration in connection with any future revisions of the general legislation relating to the powers of local authorities. There has been no change in the position since then.

Would the Minister reconsider the position in view of the difficulties experienced by the Cats and Dogs Home and the humane work they are doing which would cost a great deal more if Dublin Corporation itself were to do it? The need is greater now than it was in 1965.

I do not think it warrants the introduction of special legislation but it is noted for consideration in case any such legislation may be introduced in the future.

Would the Minister consider assisting the situation by increasing the Government grant?

I think I can utilise any money available to me for more urgent purposes.
