Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford House Purchase Loans.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether there will be made available to Wexford Corporation moneys which they may advance on loan to people who wish to purchase houses.

It was suggested to Wexford Corporation and other housing authorities by circular letter of 22nd March, 1966, advising them of their capital allocation for 1966-67, that loans for the purchase of previously occupied houses should only be made where a need for re-housing was established which would otherwise fall to be met by the housing authority. It is a matter for each authority to decide, in the light of this suggestion and their capital allocation, the extent to which they will make loans for previously occupied houses.

Wexford Corporation have not, because of this suggestion and also because of the scarcity of sites for new houses within the borough, sought any capital allocation for house-purchase loans in 1967-68. It is understood that they intend to finance otherwise the comparatively small amount involved in making loans for new houses.

In general, I may say that I have informally asked the local authorities involved to examine the position in regard to house-purchase loans in the county to see if, in particular, there would be any advantage to be gained by having the county council, whose capital allocation for loans and grants for 1967-68 is £115,000 operate their loan scheme in the borough as well as in the adjoining area, with due regard of course to the necessity to conserve available capital for the financing of new house building.
