Vol. 228 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo-Leitrim Industries.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the urgent need for establishing new industries in the SligoLeitrim area on account of the high incidence of emigration due to lack of employment opportunities; and what steps he is taking in this regard.

I am aware of the need for establishing new industries in Sligo-Leitrim, and other areas, in order to create employment opportunities. I hope that the selection of Sligo-Leitrim-Roscommon as a pilot area for the Small Industries Scheme will make a worthwhile impact on the employment problems in those counties. In addition, as I have already announced, the whole programme for attracting and assisting new industries is under examination with a view to accelerating the rate of growth in manufacturing industry.

The Deputy may take it that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in the area will receive my most sympathetic consideration.

57.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there are any proposals in his Department for the establishment of new industries in Sligo town or county; and, if so, what they are.

I am aware of one industrial proposal for County Sligo. As announced by me, on 1st December last, this is a new venture by Hanson Ltd., Sligo, for the production of battery type electric clocks and timers.
