Vol. 228 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Cork Rivers.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance when work on the drainage of the Owenabue river, County Cork will commence.

The Owenabue is the main river of the Ballinhassig catchment which is No. 17 on the priority list of minor catchments to be dealt with under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. The catchment will be dealt with in its turn but it will be some years yet before it is reached.

32.

asked the Minister for Finance when work on the drainage of the River Bride in County Cork will commence.

The River Bride will be considered by the Commissioners of Public Works for treatment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, in due course but it is not possible at present to say when it will be reached in the drainage programme.

Is the Minister in a position to tell us if drainage of either of these rivers will be undertaken before he undertakes the drainage of the Shannon?

As the Deputy knows, we have made money available this year for the initial operations on the Shannon, to commence survey and so on.

I have seen that happening before.

But the Deputy has not seen it happen before under this Government.
