Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Yields of Excise Duties.

23.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the revenue accruing to the Exchequer from the sale of (a) a glass of Irish whiskey, (b) a glass of Scotch whisky, (c) a glass of brandy, (d) a pint of stout or beer, (e) a packet of 20 cigarettes, and (f) an ounce of tobacco.

As the answer includes a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the information:

The approximate customs or excise duty borne by the items in question is as follows:

*The variation is due to differences in gravity.

†The variation is due to differences in moisture content and other factors.

The turnover tax payable on receipts from sales of the items mentioned is 2½ per cent of the retail price.

For the information of Deputies generally the Revenue content of a glass of Irish whiskey is 2/6.9d.

It is very kind of the Minister to address these words to a teetotaller. It is a very bad ploy for the local elections.

What amount did the Minister mention?

The amount is 2/6.9d.

Is that for Irish or Scotch?

The Deputy should not be interested in Scotch. In the case of a glass of Scotch, the figure is 2/10.9 and brandy, 2/11.2.

Prices have changed since I was a boy.

The duty content in the case of a packet of plain cigarettes is 3/5.4d.
