Vol. 230 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosks.

8.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the need for a public telephone kiosk at Duagh, County Kerry; and, if so, when it is proposed to provide one there.

A kiosk in the area is not warranted at present.

9.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the need for a public telephone kiosk at Lohercannon, Tralee, County Kerry; and why it has not been provided for the benefit of the residents of the district.

The existing public telephone facilities in this general area are considered adequate and provision of a kiosk is not warranted.

10.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will accede to the request of the Ballineen and Enniskeane Development Association to have a telephone kiosk erected at Castletown village, Enniskeane, County Cork.

The existing public telephone facilities in the village are not used to an extent that would warrant provision of a kiosk.

Is it the Minister's policy not to co-operate with development associations who are endeavouring to improve facilities in their districts?

There are adequate telephone facilities in this area. For example, the office in Castletown is used for only about four calls a day, and there are seven telephones, including a coin box line within a mile radius.

Is the Minister aware that in a small country post office, it is not possible to conduct a private conversation over the phone, due to the lack of suitable facilities and that such offices close at six o'clock in the evening, and, consequently, the public have no means of utilising the telephone service unless, as the Association claim in respect of Castletown, a public box is erected?

I am aware there are some difficulties, but there are silence cabinets in many offices.

Would the Minister be prepared to reconsider this question?

Yes, I shall have it reconsidered.
